I thought the maximum is only 8 channels.

I'm not so sure, that 32 voices (for sound effects) are supported as
someone said. Most likely, it only appeared that way because you can
edit the file and have the program read it without errors. But what may
actually be happening is that a)the program uses 8 (its maximum?) to try
to follow best the instruction for 32 channels, or b) it is only looking
for one digit, so it ignores anything after the first digit. In this
case, it interpreted 32 as 3 channels really. I think it can still have
the monsters scream their death throes with the plasma gun firing even at
3 channels.

I have disks v2.06, and I've heard about the v3.1 disks. What's on them,
that's special enough for me to upgrade? Also, so many people are having
problems installing them, is it worth it? Better yet, what are some tips
to help avoid the installation traps other people had?
Thanks.

Subject: Demo Coders and GUS support
I know that I was influenced to purchase my GUS because of the support from
Demo Groups. Especially the Future Crew and Twilight Zone.
FC constantly puts out quality releases, and the Ultrasound support
option encouraged me. Also, some demos (Monty Python, by TZ) only support
the GUS, and the music and sound are some of the best elements of a demo.
I was shopping for a 16 bit soundcard (for stereo, especially), and all
the talk on comp.sys.ibm.pc.demos about the Ultrasound got me interested
in it. Then I started reading the GUS digest to find out about it. Since
then, myself and two of my friends have gotten GUSses. No problems with any
programs, and we are all big demo fans (though they aren't netties like I
am)
So a big thanks goes to the Future Crew! You helped save at least 2
people from the horrors of buying a PAS-16 instead of a GUS.
This bothers me that you have said this, though... Does Future Crew not
plan to support the GUS in the future??? Please respond.

Subject: DOOM and Raptor
Ok, just like to add that Raptor works fine for me with 8 channels
although I do get the famous joystick drift every so often. No
slow-downs though. I'm running it on a 486dx-33 with 8MB ram. I don't
believe that Raptor supports 32 channels however. When I edited the
config file to 32 channels I lost my machine gun sound... so I'm thinking
it just looks at a single digit... i.e. if you put 32 for your value,
you'll really only get 3 channels. Also, Raptor ASSUMES that you're
using DMA 1, so edit that config to match your own setup.
Someone also asked about raising the number of channels in Doom. Just
look in the default.cfg file and change it to 32. I did that and
experience NO SLOW DOWNS and AWESOME sound... GUS FOREVER!!!
Shawn.

Duh?

I fear you have 2 things mixed up. 32-BIT AIL drivers are needed for 32-BIT
games (flat protected mode - it's using your memory with DOS out of the way).
The Doom and Raptor sound code (coded by Cygnus, I am told, at least for D1.3)
uses its own drivers so AIL is not an issue. What we ARE talking about is
32 CHANNELS. That's right. The Cygnus sound code allows several sound
effects to be played back simultaneously (chainsaw and growls of pain, 4X),
and an arbitrary number is given (4 usually) to keep the sound code from
working too hard and slowing down the entire game.
On the GUS (if you have enough RAM) mixing is done on-board, so the only issue
for the sound code is whether that particular effect has been previously
played back. Thus, you can raise the maximum channel number to something
ridiculous (32), without the game slowing down. Of course, if you have 32
effects going at once you're probably getting so much flak you're dead anyway,
but this means that the game will stay cool for 6 or 8 without clipping.
To change the channel count you just edit default.cfg (or setup.ini) and
change the appropriate line from 4 to, say, 32.

I'd like the sceptics to write down this gem, along with the one about "why
does anybody think GUS is so tough". I haven't seen the 3.1 manual, but it
seems it's VERY WELL written - I have heard of newbies getting games up and
running with MegaEm before they've cleared the packing materials.
>and I was wondering how to I go
>about creating samples in such a way that I can use them in like a MOD file.
If you want a MOD sample, you need 16KHz signed 8bit raw data. The Hertzage
isn't that important, but if you sample an A at 16KHz you won't need to
transpose the sample when composing (am I right on this?).
>I've tried using USS8 to get a sample of my acoustic guitar, but I don't seem
>to be doing it right.
You're probably creating unsigned data (IBM standard). The Amiga used signed
data, and the SoundTracker MOD format is Amigan. Just open the file under
GoldWave or CoolWave (both available from ftp.cica.indiana.edu:pub/pc/win3/
sounds) and issue a "Byte Swap" or "Export" to fix it.
There's a good sample primer somewhere around, I think the guys at gus-music
could help you on that.
HTH,
Yossi.
PS A very good guitar sample can be ripped from Purple Motion's (whimper,
grovel) "A Touch of Spring", an S3M available in JOURNEY.ARJ, their music
disk.

Anyway, there's a whole new version of Wolfie (1.4+) with native GUS support

Everytime I try playing some demo/music with GUS, it doesn't sound correctly
even I set up the configuration properly, and worse, my GUS sometime hangs
the computer...(That's what the repair man said)
I didn't have any problem with my GUS and other system conbination.
Does anyone know what the problem is?

Thank you.

Can enyone tell me how to get my old pas, (for compatibility) to work
with my gus, and with my mouse? The mouse is at 23Ch, and i would like
the pas to be at 220 for sb emulation, but for some reason, setting the
gus at 240 makes some programs crash, icluding Iplay, when i have all the
drivers loaded (pas, gus, and mouse). would there be a problem with the
pas scsi being at 384h? Sometimes it works when the CDROM drivers are not
loaded. I've already tried several combinations, but cant figure it out!
Any one done this? I'm going nuts with this, it doesn't work when i know

I upgraded to 1meg a while back and when I did I snagged a couple of the
big demos out there (2nd Reality(?),Crystal Dreams 2, etc.) well the 2nd
reality one and crystal dreams froze up after a while. would that have
to do with my chips. I have no idea what brand they were, I just asked
for chips with the correct specs and I even checked the numbers and they
checked out alright (I thought). I haven't had any other problems, and by
no means am I upset, I just took it in stride, although I'd like to know
why it would do something like this and try to fix it.
one more question. could you guys tell me what some good demos to check

To all,
I just got Raptor and with 8 channels there is absolutely no slowdown,
lockups, or delays whatsoever. Works perfectly. I have a GUS rev.2.4 with
only 256k of DRAM. Maybe it's because it uses software mixing and I have a
Pentium 60mhz..... Doom also sounds real good with 20 channels. Good luck
all!

The slowdown in Iplay has a natural explanation: Iplay keeps a copy of all
the samples in RAM, and uses these to calculate the fourier analysis and
the wave-forms... These calculations take time, playing them on the GUS
don't, as you'll see if you shell to DOS... No more(not much more) is used
playing a 22 channel mod than playing a 4 channel one... Try playing the
same mod/ult on a SB, and then shell to dos... There you'll see the
power of the GUS......

Anyone playing The Horde and getting it to work? There is no setup
program - it autodetects the GUS, but then the game starts and in the
intro screen and also the interludes (where there is speech/samples) it
just dumps the memory real quickly.
The game does not appear to use the ULTRASND environment variables as I
removed them (and played with them) to no avail.
I am using a GUS rev2.2 (all the way back from August 92). And the
software contained in gus0041.zip.
Please let me know via email or this list.

Forget SBOS...
Get yer hands on UltraWolf- this is the greatest Wolf3D add-on for
GUSsers that was ever made.
This baby will let you have 3D sounds in Wolfenstein, and some of the
best sounding guns you are ever likely to hear in a game.
Add to this the ability to play your favourite MODS as background
music. It'll blow your SoundBlaster friends away!
You should find it up on EPAS or one of the mirrors in the games area.
(Wish we had an add-on like this for Doom ! - Is the developer of
UltraWolf working on similar things for DOOM- the gun samples sound
really lame compared to UltraWolf!)
